What appears to be a rainbow ring around the sun is technically, not a rainbow at all, this optical phenomenon is called a “Solar Halo”.
Solar and Lunar Halos can occur around the sun or moon (respectively) and are created by tiny ice crystals inside cirrus clouds located in the upper troposphere as they refract the light. This scare phenomenon may last up to several hours but many of them fade after only a few minutes. Though the halo is created in ice crystals it can occur any time of year. This image was taken in June, while the temperatures on the ground was warm, it was obviously cold enough in the troposphere for ice crystals to form. The larger halo was created by lens flare caused from the location of the sun in the image, creating a beautifully reversed refraction of light inside the lens.
